SA has highest ratio in prisons and the stupid solution!

South Africa has the highest percentage of citizens in prisons in the world, as reported by a popular TV Station. 3.5 out of every 1 000 citizens are in the correctional centers.

In addition, it was stated that there was a marked improvement in the reduction of overcrowding in prisons. In fact from 170% to 139%. Now what does that tell us.

1. Crime has reduced – NO WAYS!
2. More people are getting out on parole. – YES! SORRY!

In another recent article it was stated that “All inmates sentenced to life imprisonment before October 1 2004 will be subject to an audit, which will focus on the possibility of granting parole, the department of correctional services said on Tuesday”

This is ridiculous. If there was the death sentence, none of this would have happened. Parole should only be considered for people with crimes not as bad as Murder and Rape. Maybe a theft of a mobile phone or a car at most.

“Did you know that a man that had confessed to murdering 3 innocent people has gotten out on parole after only serving 7 years”

Did you know:

The High Court has ordered the early release on parole this week of two convicted wife killers and a man who battered to death his mistress’s husband.

Enough said.

50% of crime in South Africa is committed in Gauteng

Gauteng has the highest crime rate in South Africa

Despite being the smallest province in South Africa, 50% of all crime committed in South Africa comes from Gauteng.

International drug syndicates operate from Johannesburg (The main business and drug capital of South Africa) to other parts of the world and firearms belonging to the police and army are easily accessible to criminals in the province.

As much as 85% of crime comes from Soweto where much of the police force needs to focus on.

What can be done about this crime problem?

  1. The 10111 emergency number needs to be sorted out. There are instances recorded whereby citizens have waited as few hours for response. This service really needs to be jacked up. People must keep the numbers of their local police stations for direct contact. They must also keep the phone numbers of their local community patrol / alarm company if one is available.
  2. There are too little police officers for the amount of crime committed. Perhaps if the pay was better, more people would join the force. There is a budget to pay more policemen so if people are so desperate for jobs, they must join the police force. Beggars can’t be choosers so instead of theft, let the people be trained to become police officers.
  3. According to an official, some police are actually very unfit and lazy. This must be sorted out ASAP.
  4. Police must be allocated correctly. Did you know that Tembisa township containing 1 million people has only 1 police station allocated to them. This is ridiculous.
  5. Drug operations need to be beefed up to catch these criminals since they contribute greatly to murders being committed.
  6. Add the death penalty and we will keep saying this! It will cut down on crime in general and also save so much costs on jails and used these funds to get the police force stronger than ever.

According to the police chief, a lot more of the focus is now on Gauteng especially in the areas such as Soweto and Tembisa. The police stations with the worse crime rates are being sorted out hopefully.

This is obviously going to take time and the criminals will most probably move away to other provinces.

The crime in the other provinces is actually not that much worse as compared to some other countries. It’s just Gauteng that makes it bad!

Another province that needs to be focused on is KZN (Kwazulu Natal). KwaMashu (north of Durban), Kwa-Zulu Natal, is South Africa’s murder capital having 235 murders last year (2009) and has a population of just over 500,000. More focus needs to be put on this area.

Is poverty the cause of crime?

Look at India, the crime rate is very little compared to South Africa and guess what? India has a very high poverty rate.

This leads us to some causes of crime:

1. Bad Education: Many of our youths have no knowledge and have been programmed by hate speeches, parents, family to hate each other and to kill for food or for racist purposes. Does primary school, high school help? To a certain extent, people are learned to live with each other and their differences such as race, religion etc. The main thing about having a good education is:

If you have good education…. You will be able to get a job. If you have a job, you will not have to find alternative ways to get money such as theft and murder.

2. Poverty: You have no food? What now? Let’s steal to survive. But why kill innocent people? Because people have been programmed to do that and not to care for ones lives. Poverty has been caused due to a lack of education and tough conditions in our country. Now there is “Equal Opportunity” so anybody can go to school, get an education, and get a good salary unlike the past.

3. Race related – Many crimes are made worse due to the past problems in South Africa. For example, instead of stealing, people get shot dead and sometimes nothing gets taken from their premises. The past is the past and people must stop trying to get revenge over the past.

The solution:

Add the death penalty. Add more severe penalties. If somebody is so desperate for food, they will steal and even enjoy going to jail to eat and have a roof over their heads. This is not everybody but many. If you rape somebody, you should go to jail for at least 25 years or 10 years and get castrated.

Job creation – Let’s say there is a new solar power company in this country and they need 10000 people to create these panels. There are many ways to create jobs in this country and if this country get’s run like it should, things will start coming right.

Better interaction between the different races and religions needs to be implemented in this country. I mean let’s each add 10 new friends to Facebook from different race and religion. Let’s learn about each others cultures.

Conclusion

Many poor countries have much less crime than us. Why is that? What are we not doing? The government perhaps needs to find better ways to deal with crime and get better training methods.

Poverty pays a great role in crime but can be prevented by adding the death penalty and more severe punishment for rapists and also for theft and drugs.

The goverment’s role in crime prevention

Crime in South Africa is not getting any better, if not deteriorating in many areas. People are ever more scared of coming to this beautiful country. The government has put in different measures to improve on crime especially for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The crime has actually lessened at that period in average. Or everybody was too busy watching the soccer or I don’t know!

The answer is simple. The government will never do enough unless they bring back the death penalty and increase the punishment for breaking the law. Look in Singapore and other places, they chop your finger off for a first theft offense. They chop off your hand the next time you steal. You get fined for throwing bubble gum in the street. If you rape somebody, you don’t want to know what will happen to you!

Why not bring back the death penalty? People steal for food, then they land up in jail and have free food and accommodation. People murder and go to jail after being released within a few years. That is why the crime is horrible. What other country gives a person 3 years for rape and 5 years for stealing a car.

Makes no sense. Take your time to answer the poll in this post.

Is the government playing its role in crime prevention in South Africa?
